Changing The World For The Better Means Converting Your Own Character From Within And Altering Your Conduct
When Mahatma Gandhi proclaimed "we must be the change we want to see in the world," he may not have realized how many people would be inspired by his brave words. If anyone had the right to make such a statement, it was Gandhi. He was so determined to make his nation free of British rule that he was prepared to undergo torture, dangers, and severe poverty just to bring improvements to the world. Even though his words have been at least somewhat diluted by their worldwide recognition, they still reach people right now. As success quotes go, it is one of the more motivating ones. Specifically to individuals that enjoy inspirational and success quotes, it is powerful. Even the cheesy "be the change" bumper stickers might, sometimes, cause people to stop and reflect, as all the very best success quotes do.
Stopping and thinking, though, was not all that Gandhi had in mind. Just mulling over improving the world doesn't truly do anything to help anyone. In order to be the change, you must be prepared to give up everything including your feeling of identity. You must tie yourself to your ideals so that there is no difference between your ideas and behavior. This is what it means to be the change.
Although Martin Luther King's "I have a Dream" lecture is more well-known, Gandhi's words seem to have encouraged a far greater slew of causes. Now days, people use the expression "be the change" to communicate support for Health care reform, urban renewal, the environment, and many other causes. Basically, everybody who is out there working to make the world a greater place can, to a greater or lesser degree, link their struggle to these well-known words.
The majority of the leaders, youthful and old, who are truly working to make the world a greater place aren't very flashy about it. Usually, the people you see running for office or sporting political pins and bumper stickers are not the ones who are truly out there, day in and day out, doing the work. The real heroes are often unknown. Although everyone has heard of Mahatma Gandhi, few people know about many of the other activists who were also trying to get the English out of India. They were content to work in obscurity, hopeful that one day their aspirations of freedom would come true.
It does not matter what you are working for. If it is important enough for you to surrender a safe, secure life to work for revolution, it has value. Don't stress about being recognized for what you do. It is sufficient to "be the change" and let the world feel your love.
