Benchmade 710 - The High End Multi Purpose Pocket Knife
The Benchmade 710 although plain looking is the end result of lots of hard work over the path of 4 years of the two famous designers Bull McHenry and Jason Williams. It features the AXIS lock, which was also designed by Bill and Jason. The lock will allow for easy one-handed opening and closing of the blade, and is completely ambidextrous. The design is very intuitive to operate with little or no direction needed on how the lock functions.
Simplicity of the lock is not the main selling point, its brute strength is. Through testing, the lock withstood a load of over 200 pounds with no damage. When the lock finally failed, the liners merely cracked over the locking pin but in no way would the blade have closed on the user hand in testing.
The AXIS lock has two Omega shaped springs. This design gives excellent functional redundancy. The springs are lightly pressured and tests show they should last indefinitely. In the unlikely incident that one of the springs does fail, the other can still operate the knife just fine.
Is this the strongest lock made? That's very difficult to say for certain. The manufacturer states the Benchmade 710 is more strong than any other knives on market. The blade of the model 710 has a reverse-curve grind for increased cutting capability. It is made out of D2 steel.
A removable stainless steel pocket clip is located on the base end of the knife. The design of the locking system is the reason why the clip is positioned on the base end. If the clip were positioned on the pivot end, the knife would protrude much very far out of your pocket.
Belt clip feels natural in hand and is reversible. My 710 Benchmade is used for everything, cutting paper and cardboard, opening packages and envelopes, cutting string, heavy duty plastic box straps, cutting into the occasional snack, etc., and it holds its edge.
