A Young Male Needs Therapy For His Severe Depression, Relationship Difficulties, And For His Alcohol Dependency And Drug Addiction

About ten months ago I had lunch with a forty-two-year-old man named Benjamin who experiences severe depression, has relationship issues, and who is addicted to drugs and alcohol. As affirmed by Benjamin, it is his drug and alcohol dependency and his intense depression that has had the most to do with his perpetual relationship problems.

As declared by Benjamin, he is so dejected by his relationship difficulties and by both of his medical conditions that he essentially has little or no desire to accomplish much of anything. What is especially sad about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin managed to finish two semesters of graduate school in developmental psychology.

Benjamin's circumstance makes me question if he is an example of a person who can look within and see his drug abuse and drinking problems and do something meaningful about these issues. Or, on the other hand, if he is someone who has to hit rock-bottom before he gets alcohol and drug addiction counseling that leads to long lasting sobriety.

It may be asked how therapy would help his alcohol and drug addiction. First of all, there are more than a few newly created doctor-prescribed medications that can help Benjamin avoid an alcohol or a drug relapse, help him through the drug and alcohol detoxification process, and help him through his withdrawal symptoms. Second, in counseling he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the different stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to admit the fact that there is entirely nothing affirmative about chemical dependency and negative drinking. In a similar way, he would also learn that messing around with one or both of these unhealthy circumstances is the route to shattered relationships, a premature death, legal problems, financial difficulties, deteriorating health, and poor work and school performance. Fourth, counseling for his relationship problems and his depression might help him cope with these mental health problems more effectively and perhaps create less of a need for him to engage in additive behavior. And finally,in rehabilitation he could also learn more about the diverse symptoms of alcoholism that he has displayed.

Since Benjamin doesn't have the drive to accomplish much of anything in his life, it is obvious that he badly needs a little hope for a healthier life. And the unfortunate thing is that hope is virtually everywhere around Benjamin if he could only get to the place in life to get the therapy he requires for his mental illness and drug addiction and alcohol dependency and remain in his treatment program.

Benjamin is simply too young to be defeated in life. He doesn't comprehend this at the moment but if he can learn how to stay away from drugs and alcohol through drug and alcohol rehab and get the counseling he needs for his acute depression, he can turn his life around and start living with passion, direction, and with self-respect.

More solid relationships, a wonderful life, self esteem, and positive change are clearly a reality for Benjamin. But only if he can get motivated to get the professional rehabilitation he needs, follow through with his therapy program, live his life in an addiction-free and healthy way, and learn how to develop a more positive attitude about his existence.
