A Thoughtful Boss Helps A Worker Address His Abusive And Irresponsible Drinking After A Destroyed Relationship

Barry got expelled from high school when he was fifteen years old and eventually got a job at a local landfill. For the past eight-and-a-half years he has gained a reputation as a hard-working employee who infrequently takes off from work due to illness.

Roughly nine months ago he began going out with a woman named Carol. They seemed to get along real well immediately and looked as if they had a lot of fun with one another.

When Barry met Carol, he almost never drank. This circumstance totally changed when they started seeing each other on a fairly usual basis. If truth be told, everything was going fine until Carol without warning called Barry one night roughly 4:30 AM and said that she had to breakup and that she couldn't tell him what was going on at that time.

The next morning before he went to work, Barry drove to Carol's apartment and found out almost immediately that Carol had already moved out. Barry received this news exceedingly hard. Actually, he was stunned because they seemed to be getting along so well.

So what did Barry do about Carol's leaving? Instead of working through his grief and anguish, he started getting inebriated nearly every night. It didn't take long for his fellow employees and for his manager to see that Barry was coming to work late at least twice per week and that he frequently called off ill. Furthermore, some of his fellow employees made an appointment with staff in Human Resources and stated that Barry constantly came to work with a strong odor of alcohol on his clothes or on his breath.

Barry's manager heard about all of this from Human Resources and also from Barry's fellow employees. So one Thursday afternoon he asked Barry to come into his office. He told Barry that he had recently noticed a definite change in his attendance, behavior, work performance, and in his sick time.

"Barry, I'm not an authority about alcohol facts and I'm not especially all that conversant with alcoholism facts, but I have seen several of my relatives and friends go through some really destructive problems due to their excessive and hazardous drinking. My suggestion is that you take time and learn more facts about alcohol and what alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse can do to a person."

"Why is this relevant? When people engage in heavy and abusive drinking, their drinking issues not only negatively affect the drinker, but they also make a negative impact on her or his relatives, co-workers, family, friends, and neighbors. Barry, in short, I want you to get some help for your hazardous drinking from our fine employee's assistance program."

Barry admired his supervisor quite a lot and as a result followed through with his suggestion the next morning when he called and made an appointment with a psychologist in the employee's assistance program. Although Barry didn't automatically feel any less depressed or feel better about the sorrow he still has about Carol, he felt comfort knowing that his manager and his co-workers wanted what's best for him and cared about him. This gave Barry some psychological relief for the first time in quite a few months and he frankly experienced some hope that he would get his life back on track.
