A Physical Education And Health Teacher Instructs Her Pupils About The Relevant Issues Involved In Alcoholism Signs
Miss Jackson was a health teacher at the most financially challenged private high school in the county. Even though she had been teaching for only three of four years, she had already obtained a reputation as an educator with teaching techniques that inspired and motivated the students in her class to learn and to think.
For instance, one Monday morning at 11:30 she addressed the pupils in her classroom and announced the following: "For the next few days we are going to learn about some commonplace alcoholism signs from a more broad-based perspective and we are also going to learn about some of the most typical signs of alcoholism from a more specific viewpoint."
"Not all of these alcoholism warning signs will categorically reveal that an individual with a drinking problem is an alcoholic, but the more signs that an individual manifests, the higher the probability that she or he is an individual who is addicted to alcohol."
Miss Jackson then told the members of the class that each pupil would be held responsible for examining three alcohol addiction signs and then presenting his or her findings to the rest of the class via a six minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the pupils completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcohol dependency signs that were presented and discussed in class and in the presentations. Miss Jackson then asked her pupils to study the list and rank the top nine alcoholism signs that were most indicative of alcoholism. After about twenty minutes, Miss Jackson collected the pieces of paper and explained to her pupils that after she evaluates the results, she will reveal her findings the next school day.
Miss Jackson told the students in her classroom to go over the information on the piece of paper she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any concerns, issues, or questions. Within 20 or 30 seconds, virtually everyone in the classroom raised his or her hand. It was apparent that the pupils had some issues, concerns, or questions about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism professionals. For example, virtually every individual in the classroom disagreed with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism specialists, namely, "Do you feel extremely nauseous when you refrain from drinking?"
Miss Jackson then informed the pupils in her class why this answer was the most precise sign of alcoholism. She underscored the fact that the key difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism is the physical dependency that is experienced with alcohol dependency and not with alcohol abuse.
In effect this means that when an alcoholic abruptly quits drinking, he or she will suffer through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the importance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the alcohol dependent individual, the pupils started to appreciate the primary difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction.
A few minutes later the bell rang, signaling the end of class. Based on the enthusiasm manifested by the students when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Jackson recognized that she had inspired and stimulated the students in her classroom to stop and think about a vital health issue and social problem that exists in our society.
