A Ninth Grade Male Student Drinks Excessively With His Pals, Suffers From An Alcohol Overdose, And Discovers That Learning Something In Class Can Affect Your Life

Andy was a high school freshman who frequently seemed to be living on the edge. Andy had a risk taking personality and usually wanted to do what his older brothers were doing. The main holdup with this was that all three of his brothers were at least 21 years old and were as a consequence legally allowed to operate a car or truck and to ingest alcohol.

Andy, then again, had a difficult time understanding the fact that as a fifteen-year-old person he should not be drinking alcoholic beverages. In fact, then again, Andy often drank with his high school buddies after school, predominantly on the weekends.

One weekend, Andy made up his mind to drive around with some of his older pals. One of his buddies was old enough to buy alcohol. After purchasing some beer, wine coolers, and wine, Andy and his pals went to a park and drank for something like three hours.

After drinking more or less nine bottles of beer, Andy started to feel nauseous and then vomited. When he became unconscious on the tennis court, one of his guy friends called 911 for immediate assistance. It was fortunate that the call for emergency help was made because when his cronies went to the hospital to see Andy, they found out that Andy had been manifesting alcohol poisoning symptoms. In short, Andy had suffered through an alcohol overdose.

After getting alcohol poisoning treatment, Andy was quite taken aback to find out that he had overdosed on alcohol because he "only" had more or less five or ten alcoholic beverages. When he explained this to the attending doctor at the hospital, however, the healthcare professional notified Andy that drinking five or ten cans of beer over a two or three hour time frame could in fact be quite a bit more alcohol than can be metabolized by the body. The physician further emphasized how too much alcohol can cause the brain to shut down an individual's breathing and that when this takes place, an individual can cease to exist.

This was the first word of warning to Andy that he was drinking in a risky manner and that there are effects for such behavior. The healthcare professional told Andy that he was a fortunate young man because he almost perished from alcohol poisoning the previous night.

The healthcare practitioner also talked to Andy's parents and suggested that they get alcohol counseling for Andy. His parents were relieved that Andy was safe and sound and notified the physician that they would get Andy alcohol treatment.

While conversing with his parents, Andy notified them that there must be a good reason why he did not pass away and that he felt a sense of thankfulness that he was still alive. He also notified his parents that the weirdest part about the entire drinking situation was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning the last six week grading period at school in health class.

At the time, what his health instructor, Mr. Johnson, was articulating didn't seem to make too much sense to Andy. Now that he almost died, in spite of this, he felt that he should have listened more conscientiously in class and applied what he had learned to his daily living.

Andy notified his parents that he couldn't wait to go back to Mr. Johnson's classroom and make an apology to Mr. Johnson for not paying closer attention to something that was as important as learning about alcohol poisoning.
